  • Musashi's Review:
Marketing is so important in music. So many bands send me demos and before I even listen to them I have an idea whether or not I'm going to like them or at least give them more than 30 seconds in my CD player. Core Device is from New Jersey. A plus. They have a great looking press kit. The three song CD comes in a cardboard sleeve that is professionally printed and shrinkwrapped and velcroed inside a folder which contains a nice letter, a photo, a bio and lyrics to all three songs. Wow. I know these guys are serious. So with that first impression I am eager to put the CD into the player.

Of course, when expectations are high, the music has to meet those expectations or they get junked like so many other demos. With Core Device it's a tough call. I have to take into account my own subjective likes and dislikes. I don't like Goth and Doom metal. Daniel sounds a little too much like Pete Steel for me. Core Device's music, however, does not remind me of Type O Negative. Core Device seem to have blended the doom vocals with a more typical power and progessive metal sound sometimes reminding me of Queensryche or Dream Theater and sometimes boardering on speed and thrash metal.

I think the vocals really color the whole sound of the band. I hear some good instrumental parts and riffs but when the vocals enter the music takes on a different character. My expectation when looking at this band was to hear a power and progressive metal band. I am a little disappointed by the gloomy doomy sound that is coming out of my speakers right now.

As I sit here listening to the tenor vocals and the thrashy riffs I am confused. I feel that objectively this is a good demo. It is well produced and packaged and shows the band in a very good light. Subjectively, I really do not care for the music. If it were my record label, I would pass on Core Device. However, I would be quick to recommend the band to some labels that are more friendly towards doom and goth metal.
