Hel's Review:
Honestly, I didn't really expect what came out of my speakers when I hit play on The Meaning Unseen. I had this self produced disc handed to me by their very personable drummer at Ozzfest 2005, and have had it hanging around ever since, waiting for a review to be written. Why has it taken me so long to do this? Well, the truth is, I simply haven't been able to decide exactly how I feel about it.I don't really know what I had thought this Aussie band would sound like, maybe more predominately modern thrash. But overall what they seem to most remind me of is the Fear Factory / Machine Head school. And while I once really liked those bands - and the part of me that did thinks this is amazing - that was a long time ago and these days I'm not too keen on it. There is something else too, something that I can't quite quantify that makes it much cooler than it might seem from my description.
The production is wonderful, and the music truly shines through. This is absolutely a record that begs to be picked up and immediately released by a label. I might not be the perfect audience for Contrive, but there is certainly a ready audience for them and I believe they would embrace this wholeheartedly.
So in the end, I guess it's not really my thing these days, but Contrive has a sound that is beautifully presented and has the capability to take them pretty far in the U.S. market, in my humble opinion. Definitely worth checking out.
