  • Zilla's Review:
St. Louis' Conquest is a band of road dawgs that have been kicking around since the mid-80's. Having released several demos and 3 full length albums, you'd think Conquest would have grown some, because this sure sounds like a mid-80's release.

What you get in Conquest is decently played, melodic, traditional bar metal. Nothing more, nothing less. The majority of the material is mid-paced with the occasional "ooh, that was cool" riff. Vocally, Derrick Brumley doesn't change his delivery at all...all gravely, all the time. This doesn't work well when the band tries to slow it down like on "No Mercy 9/11," the band's tribute to the 9/11 tragedy. However, the Zakk Wylde-like squeals on "Take" were kinda cool (said in my best Beavis voice mind you).

The thing that bugs me most with No Boundaries is that everything is just average. I've heard, in fact I think I still own, their 2000 release Damnation and there were at least two, maybe three tracks that at least made you want to rock along. Nothing is grabbing me like that on this one at all. It's just there.

I don't see Conquest growing their audience much with this disc. Then again, this may not be a concern for them either. Like I opened with, these guys are road dawgs and play gigs all the time, opening for some big names too. I guess there's nothing like a bar band to get you drinking, right?
