Finland's Charisma were nice enough to send a copy of their new demo disc, the sweetly bizarrely titled Beat Your Attitude. After perusing the poorly translated (yet strangely entertaining) band bio, I popped in the disc and (good news for the band), quickly realized that it was best to have the band's music speak for itself.

The four tracks on this disc speak (without fear of mistranslation) of a band with enormous promise. "Upstream" is a finely written piece, with warm Scandinavian melody and an underbelly of good straight-forward Heavy Metal chug. The musicianship is great all around; the only possible detriment is the vocal style of singer Teemu, which comes across as too "dark" and "creepy" for my tastes. "Beat Your Attitude" follows the opener, and is not quite as strong as its predecessor. The vocals, once more, are a little too raspy, and the almost hip hop vocal cadence does not work, but is only used in one small instance. The song is still a nice listen musically, but the singing is just a bit too in-your-face here.

"Deceased" and "Words Before Denying" provide a solid second half to this demo, just long enough to make the listener want to hear more. The production is immaculate and lush to boot. Charisma's band members definitely know how to construct a top notch song. It is very easy to tell that they are all seasoned musicians, and when a group of guys from Finland who share a similar resolve to create entertaining metal music get together, the results are usually quite good.
