Hel's Review:
I don't know why, but I just had this feeling that we would be short on demo reviews this week. So when this demo came in the mail the other day, I set it aside with the notion that I would do it in a pinch. It was fortunate timing that I did so.The enclosed press sheet states, in less than perfect English, that some of the members are from Carpathian Forest, Green Carnation, and Trail of Tears, which of course, piqued my interest. The sheet also says, "Chain Collector are from Norway and was formed in 2003 as an idea which all of us wanted, to play hard (heavy metal) but still melodic." These slightly disjointed statements are part of a paragraph that is inkjet printed on a single sheet of thick stock paper along with a color logo as well as color photos of the band. The CD sleeve is also printed via color inkjet, but the quality of this is very high, and looks quite sharp. I was saddened to notice the enclosed CDR did not have any attention paid to it - it was completely blank. This is a pet peeve of mine - I very much understand sending demos out on CDR, but at least write your band name on it! I always have visions of someone taking it out of the player and just setting it down, not knowing where it belonged, and the CD being lost forever. But even beyond that, since everything else is put together so nicely, it seems a shame that this final detail has been overlooked.
Of course, all of this is incidental, yet important, because if it had not been for the presentation, you would not be reading this review right now. But what is truly important is the music on the disc. Of the four songs included, I have to admit I like the first track, "Wicked Mask" the least. I suppose the thought behind its placement is that it is the most commercially appealing, and in general, that is appropriate logic for a demo, except for the fact that the most commercially appealing song by a metal band is usually its weakest, as is the case here. That is not to say that the first track is bad, but while it is good, the other three tracks are absolutely wonderful, and the disc as a whole grows on me more and more as I listen to it. In many ways, this reminds me of a heavier version of Green Carnation, primarily because of the vocals. While at the beginning of the first songs I was wondering if I'd even like this, by the fourth track, "Fallen Angel," I found myself completely and totally addicted, and wishing it was more than just a demo.
It will be an absolute crime if a label does not pick up this band instantly. I beg all A&R folks who have this sitting in a pile on their desk - put this in your player now, and listen through all the way to the end. Fans of Green Carnation who long for the songs to be shorter and heavier - this is your dream come true - go to their website and check out these tracks today. This is, as the title claims, a "Forthcoming Addiction." I can't wait to hear more.
