  • Kefka X's Review:
So I get this CD in the mail from a band called The Cause. The presentation of the demo artwork...well, left much to be desired, consisting only of the demo's song titles and the guitarist's phone number written down on the CD's insert and the CD itself. Then I read the note left inside, written by guitarist Jerry Wilde. The philosophy of "The Cause" is that it's all about the music, and that pictures and promotional material isn't necessary to get the point across. Now I don't know if this was just a cheap excuse for not exerting the effort of printing any CD artwork or what not, but...hell, what are you going to do, sniff the sharpee?

So on with the music! The Cause is very derivative of the NWOBHM era of metal and 80's thrash. Stylistically speaking, there's not much to say here because the product itself is very straightforward. This demo is a huge slice from the 80's. From the chants to the solos, everything about this demo is 80's metal (hell, they even have a song called "Praise the Rock." How 80's can you get?).

The music itself is good, the production isn't bad at all, and the presentation of each song is professional. So what's the one thing keeping this from being the slightest bit inspiring? The age. In today's metal community, we look back at bands such as Judas Priest and Dio with admiration and respect, but the intensity and the excitement is left a memory for its time. The Cause is definitely a nostalgic piece of work, but I wouldn't consider this something that's going to turn heads (I don't know if this is their intention or not.) A few of the songs on this demo feel so outdated that they're annoying, especially "F.T.W." ("Face the World") and its god-awful chant. They also have a song called "Praise the Rock." I've mentioned this already once, but I'm mentioning it again so it can sink into your mind... just think about it.

To be fair, I'll give this 2 skulls, because it's not bad and it's a quality effort (musically speaking). It all boils down to how much you really liked this era of metal. I respect it for what it is, but I think the metal community has moved too fast to slow down 20 years without bringing something new to the table.
