    Massachusetts in the last few years has become a breeding ground for many up and coming metal acts such as Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Bonescrew, Lucubro, Gut, Anodyne, All That Remains, Crumble and a host of others. Even though I've never been to Boston, I seem to get a lot of demos from there to review. This week's band is from the Boston area and they meet the high standards set by the city that once had some issues with tea.

    Breedinground was consummated in 1999 by brothers Paul and Kyle Stoddard. It also saw the release of their Welfare Demo. They have gone through several lineup changes since their inception, including the departure of keyboardist Jaime Furtado, who played on this EP, entitled Emergence.

    Musically, they pummel you with low end crunch, a style made familiar by several nu metal acts. What sets them apart is a dueling axe attack and some serious plucking that gives it an old school thrash feel. They also have a tight rhythm section that maintains a rumble comparable to the sound tanks make as they roll through the war torn streets of a recently captured enemy city.

    Vocally, Paul Stoddard sounds like a cross between Mike Patton and Serj Tankian of System of a Down, minus the whine. He uses similar voice inflections and growls but blends them nicely into a sound all his own. This is very evident on "Flush" and "454."

    Overall, this is a quality demo. The production is excellent and sounds as good as any label funded album. I couldn't find a song I didn't like and it kept me in a "state of mosh" from start to finish. Watch for Breedinground in the future. They definitely have what it takes to make it to the next level.
