Metal Militia's Review:
Cow Tipping In C Sharp? This has got to be a joke or something, right? I was skeptical when I picked this out of the pile of demos to review. I was expecting some Kid Rock trailor park schlock. Well Boiler is no joke. They already have several releases and are exactly what they claim to be: "Metal for the working class." And the truth is they rock pretty fucking hard.Boiler has a very groove oriented sound, Pantera-like riffs and angry vocals. The grooves come out and kick ass right from the start. The best song would have to be the eighth track, "Hit The Ground." It opens with a thick bass line and some generous helpings of groove. The problem with this song, and most of the rest of the album, is that the lyrics are pretty lame. The music is good, angry drinking music, but the lyrics are repetitive and unimaginitive. For some reason I don't find repeating the line "Hit The Ground" thirty-seven times in a row to be very creative.
Another thing that annoyed me about the album was all the sound clips they used. I don't mind clips if they are used sparingly and really set up the song. Mastodon do this very well, Boiler don't. I don't need seven second clips of someone saying that the term "groovecore" was stolen from him. It doesn't set the tone for the song-- it just throws me off.
Another major complaint is that all the songs are pretty similar. Sure the riffs are different but they aren't unique. I want a riff that will stick in my mind and whenever I think of it it will kick my ass down a flight of stairs. Boiler does that once or twice and it's okay, if they can do it more often and get some better lyrics then they will do allright for themselves.
