  • Behemoth's Review:
The New Jersey Metal and Hardcore Festival was in town recently, held at the Asbury Park Convention Center, home of Bruce Springsteen. In case you missed the show, there was supposed to have been three stages, but as the business goes, ended up with only two. The main stage brought in industry heavy weights Hypocrisy, Dimmu Borgir, & Nevermore. The second stage, yet again, was held within the cavernous entrance foyer, featuring up and coming Devil Driver (What's up Dez) & Canadian stalwarts Strapping Lad.

And then a funny thing happened on the way to the bar. Setting up stage left or better yet side hallway left was unsigned Avarice. Hailing from New Jersey, this unsigned act was scheduled to have played on the third stage, but as result of promotional incompetence, settled for getting in the door period. Their performance was captivating enough to stop the mighty one, ever so briefly, from a designated refueling mission. Not to be restrained by both physical and sound barriers Avarice actually managed to pull off a decent live set.

The band hovers outside pre-conceived metal boundaries with apt musical abilities and limitless passion. Avarice has been around for about four years and blends metal styles with a twinge of hardcore and predominant hard rock structures. In full force, there are six members attempting to develop their own style of music. The band is continuing to expand musically, but at this time taking time off to write new music, seek management and perhaps ink a deal. The new material is reported to be heading in melodic metal directions with implementation of keyboards.

Brief background on members: Nick Tort handles vocals and comes from a punk/hardcore background. He's into Ill Niño (sorry to hear that), Pennywise, Ignite, Ensign, & Downset. Jay Kelly co-founded Avarice and handles lead guitar and his interests include Type O Negative, A Perfect Circle & Tool - aren't they the same? Glen Barlics is in charge of rhythm guitar; musical interests include Maiden, Machine Head & In Flames. Matt Gati plays bass and interests include metal, hardcore, & hip-hop (what?). James Borgese was also co-founder of Avarice, plays drums and is into metal, hardcore, & rap (what?). Marty Schreck spins the tables and samples; musical interests include Deftones, Primer 55, & Reveille, (cool).

Cuts off the demo include: "Prides Dull Shine", the heaviest cut - featuring a hardcore slant. Other titles include "Just a Dream", "No Eternity", "New Beginning", "No More"â & "Reflection". The lyrical content deals with inner strength concepts, turning negative to positive, just like water to wine. The band is currently fine-tuning its stage show in an attempt to display more of an aggressive presence. Avarice demonstrates musical fluidity and maturity on this release. The sound is an interesting blend of musical elements featuring power metal, constructed within fast and mid tempo songs. Overall, this is an above average balanced effort, showcasing dueling guitar leads, melodies, and harmonies through vocals and musical compositions. Process the madness by whispering into the breeze.
