Savage's Review:
Ever hear a shadow scream? That is the question posed in the opening line of audioblacK's bio. Most likely because Tony, the lead singer, paints his body black from head to toe before each show. Granted this had been done before by the likes of Tool's Maynard with his blue body paint and to some extent by bands like Mudvayne and Mushroomhead. The biggest difference here is the music and Tony's dark gothic wail.
Formed in Portland, Maine in early 2000 and dubbed "Maine's Premiere Psychoactive Metal Band", audioblacK takes bits and pieces of goth, thrash and industrial metal and throws it in a grinder for a mix unlike anything I've ever heard. One minute I'm hearing bass lines that are a cross between Primus and maybe Jane's Addiction, complemented by some Pantera-ish riffs followed up with NIN styled noises. Then you throw in Toni's voice that is slightly reminiscent of Peter Murphy from Bauhaus, only not as deep. He uses some sort of trance-like echo effect that really sets the tone for this self titled seven song demo.
Overall, this demo keeps me interested from the standout opener "Forget the Sun" to the somber closer "Sweep" that sounds like Rush on speed. Yet another great Eastern Seaboard find from the bowels of Stephen King country!
