Musashi's Review:
I don't know why, but it seems that lately I have had a lot of good demos to listen to and review. I guess some of the credit should go to you, the readers that have decided to stop sending me so much crap. Why is it that some bands can put out a great CD, and others put out such shit? I think it has something to do with the fact that people do not know how to listen, and people have no integrity. I think people listen to themselves playing and choose not to hear their mistakes, and then say to themselves, "Oh, nobody will notice that little mistake." Mistakes just keep piling up that way, and then we, the end-listener, are forced to suffer through the horror. Then there are bands like Arsis, who seem to have it together. Describing themselves as "melodic black metal," they delivered a powerful demo full of great music. Arsis lists influences such as Iron Maiden, Death, Judas Priest, Cradle of Filth, Malevolent Creation, Forbidden, Ozzy, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Dimmu Borgir, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Cynic, Emperor, Testament, etc. Yup, all the big ones. Arsis have a good melodic black metal sound and are very musical. The musicianship is top notch; they play fast and furious. The two musicians work very well together and have developed a good groove with each other that is often rare in newer bands.
If you are like me, then you are probably wondering what the hell an "Arsis" is. Thankfully, they answered that question for us. Arsis: from Latin and Greek, the accented or longer part of a poetic foot especially in accentual verse, the unaccented part of a musical measure. Interesting, huh? Well, it is better than being called Borgo Pass (which I found out is the gate or passageway to Dracula's castle).
These two musicians met at the Berklee College of Music, which is known for producing great musicians, but is located in Boston, which is not a great Mecca for heavy metal. It seems like only a matter of time before Arsis breaks out of Boston and onto the national metal scene. Check them out now.
