  • Musashi's Review:
I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this envelope out of the pile. I was excited because the return address was Sao Paulo, Brazil. That, to me, is always a good sign. All that was inside the envelope was a weird CD sleeve made out of some strange cardboard-like substance with the "Are You God?" logo stamped in the corner and a tiny business card-sized slip of paper stating that this was "3 tracks of the purest freestyle deathgrind." It insisted that this was for fans of bands like Napalm Death, Carcass, Terrorizer, Neurosis, Cannibal Corpse, etc. At least the website and email information was on that slip of paper or I would be lost.

I found my way to the website which is very informative for a mp3.com site. It was in both English and Portuguese. Upon further examination of the weird CD sleeve I saw that there was a thin sheet of paper inside that did not come out with the CD. On one side of the CD sized page, Are You God? was able to fit a picture, their logo, names of the band members, the songs with times, recording information, short bio and contact information. Incredible. The lyrics are on the website and, I wasn't sure if they were singing in English, but they are. Surprisingly their English is good. I wouldn't have guessed that this band was from Brazil if they did not tell me. As always, I was looking for some horrible or stupid mistake to comment on in my review, but, sadly, I cannot seem to find anything crappy or lame to make fun of. I resign myself to listening to the music as I click on some Brazilian porn sites.

The recording is good: not the best quality, but certainly excellent for a demo. Furthermore, the deathgrind attitude was present in the mix which helped a lot. If nothing else, AYG have a great sound and attitude which will carry them far in this genre of music.

The music is deathgrind. AYG is very heavy like Dillinger Escape Plan and all the other bands that they mentioned. I really like their intensity. The songs are short and powerful and AYG play them very fast and with conviction. Although, I find that the three songs, "My Heroes," "Deep Rise," and "The Ticket" all have a very similar feel and very similar guitar lines. Of course, one could say that about a great many bands. I found after repeated listenings, the songs never seemed to stand on their own. They just blended together into one long song. I really got a good vibe from listening to this Demo, but AYG just were not able to sustain that sensation. I look forward to more growth from this band and another CD. Meanwhile, I wonder what they will do to separate themselves from the pack? Will they be louder, faster, more Brazilian, less Brazilian, deather, or grinder? Will they make a whole album of songs that sound relatively the same or will they branch out more? Will they just keep it real? I will wait and see.
