Metal Militia's Review:
"Prog-metal:" when most metalheads hear this, they think of bands like Dream Theater, King Crimson, and Symphony X. If you like that crap, then perhaps Archetype is for you. They are prog metal with a heavy power influence. Dream Theater meets Helloween would best describe their sound, and I can't stand it. I never felt that Dream Theater were any good at anything but instrumental masturbation, and I think similarly of these guys. Every song seems like an exercise in wankery. I want substance behind my songs, I want there to be a purpose behind the song, not just how fast and technical you can be.Right from the start, the wankery begins and I have to say, from a strictly musical perspective, it is impressive, but I quickly get bored by this stuff. The lyrics are even worse, like this from the song, "Final Day:"
"Rising forth from the light of day
The lonely souls cry out in vain
Shattered hope now felt inside
Look to the heavens for compromise."Wow, brilliant. I'm sorry I can't get over the cheesiness combined with the over-done music.
I try really hard to be objective as a reviewer and judge each demo by the standards of the genre the band is going for, but this type of "prog-metal" is just way too lame for me. If you like Dream Theater and the like, by all means check these guys out, I'm sure you will like them.
