As I was reading through the promo sheets for The Ancient Enemy I was not surprised to find out that they thought of themselves as a completely unique style of metal. I have issues with this because right after they said they were a brand new style of metal that no one had ever heard before they listed several styles of metal that they are influenced by. Maybe the combination is new (I personally don't think so) but you are not a new form of metal. If you say you are influenced by metal-core, hardcore, and industrial and other shit then you are something I have heard, because I've heard all of that stuff before.

Now that has been said we can move on to the actual band. The Ancient Enemy is a good band. I have always had a soft spot for drum machine metal and these songs are done well. I don't hear the industrial influence that they were talking about other than the fact that they have a drum machine and some synth sounds. I would more say these guys sound like metal-core mixed with early Opeth. It's irritating to only have two songs because I would love to hear more of this, but since the band's website doesn't seem to work I don't know if they ever released the full length that the promo sheets talked about. If you're a fan of December Wolves' last release, Opeth's My Arms Your Hearse, and the current genre of metal-core this band is worth checking out.
