  • Musashi's Review:
Aliengates is one of those good bands that fails to inspire me. They are really good, but lack that certain something that makes you bang your head with feeling.

First, I think the name sucks. What the hell are alien gates? True the word "gates" is a very Metal word. And, yes, aliens are cool. However, I don't know if putting those two words together is right. Aliens don't have gates, they have space ships. Are the alien gates used to keep aliens in or to keep people out? Is it like a stargate? If you go through the alien gate do you end up in Switzerland? It's like the square root of a million: no one will ever know.

Second, despite having a great sounding CD, the music is boring. They say they are trying for that Gothenburg sound like In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. Sure they have the sound, but the music is not of the same caliber. I hate using the phrase "all the songs sound the same," but they do. The songs tend to have very similar melodies, chord progressions, rhythms and tempos.

Other than the music and the name, the demo is great. The artwork is great. The production is great. The website is great. Maybe I'm crazy, but I think the music is not great. Nonetheless, I have to recommend you listen to them for yourself. Aliengates are good enough to deserve your attention at least for a first listen. Maybe you will hear something that I don't.
