  • Requiem's Review:
Prepare for some serious rock. Aleda are a rock band that are pro from all angles of the game and it’s only a matter of time before somebody scoops ‘em up and pampers ‘em with Escalades and naked women. Aleda are spawned from the collective mastermind of Colin Beauchemin and Joe McDonald, who also played in Ithaca, NY based Flooring Daphne. Being a fan of Beauchemin’s writing skills and vocals, it was good to see him fronting his own band again, after leaving Boston-based Long Distance Runner. While Flooring Daphne was lethal in a more metal kind of way, Aleda takes on the rock n’ roll challenge and will soon be dropping jaws worldwide.

With a slick packaging and a meaty production to boot, these five songs should hit you flat on your ass if hard driving rock is your thing. Much along the lines of stuff like Quicksand and Into Another, Aleda’s main concern is delivering the almighty riff on top of smooth tempos, and coating it all with catchy vocal melodies. On the Lips of Disaster has a slightly spacey and somber nature to it all, hence their tagging themselves as dark rock. Colin’s vocals are the obvious highlight as they should be, but the music’s not far behind. He’s got a style that is much his own, with some Jeff Buckley highs thrown in for good measure. The riffs accompanying him are often thick and precise, or open up to huge flowing chords. "All at Once" demonstrates this perfectly with the verses rocking a start/stop nature that Helmet made popular, and by the end just spacing right out with effects galore. The production is pristine and supplies a fat, pummeling thud to your chest upon every strike of the chord.

If you are open to groove-oriented hard rock music, then Aleda should bring a smile to your face. Normally I don’t listen to demos much longer than I have to, but this has refused to leave my player for god knows how long now. Aleda are probably a new name to you as this is their first release to let the masses know that they’re out there. I’ll be damned if more than a few heads don’t find themselves addicted to these five tunes. And I’ll be damned if these guys will be releasing another demo again. Let the bidding war begin.
