Musashi's Review:
The Principality of Andorra has a population of about 67,000 people, but it seems that one company, Voliac, is the only source for metal related music in Andorra. This is sad, because I do not seem to like anything that Voliac sends me. I find Andorra to be a very interesting country, but they need to get some healthy metal competition going. I actually cringe now when I see the return address from Andorra on a jiffy pack. It means that I am going to be listening to some kind of offensive gore metal.Fortunately, Agathocles is not gore metal. They call themselves grindcore but are more noise/punk metal. Agathocles has apparently been around since 1985. In fact, the booklet in the digipak goes through every lineup change that the band has had in the last seventeen years. Talk about boring. Who the fuck cares? At least the lyrics are fun to read. Here are two examples: "I thought this was a free country but some seem more free than me. Equality and democracy? Act to make it reality. Cops were bashing up, up my head." And "Negationist thoughts for fascist dorks. Don't believe their crap. It's just another trap. Twisting history for their cause."
Yup, these politically-charged lyrics definitely put me in the mind of punk rock more than metal. I mean this is not Rage Against the Machine. Far from it. The music is raw and heavy, and has a metal garage band sort of feel to it (read: sloppy). I would have thought that seventeen years would be enough time to polish your sound, but I guess not. I can see why they call themselves grindcore, but I have heard much better examples of grindcore than Agathocles. This brand of metal is for the folks in the third world that are being oppressed and can't find good metal.
There is not a whole lot to be said for Agathocles. They have been doing this for seventeen years and will probably keep going despite my protests. I do not like it, but apparently, they have impressed enough people along the way to keep themselves in business. Despite the fact that this might be the best CD I have received from Voliac, I still do not recommend it nor would I dare give it more than 2 skulls, and even that is generous.
