  • Golgotha's Review:
With the metal world growing at exponential rates, it's hard to find bands (who aren't blatant rip-offs of Morbid Angel, Darkthrone, or any of the core bands to what we know is metal) that really stand above the rest and could possibly change the way people look at the metal industry. In my recent searches for parts of the globe that are producing numerous amounts of good music, Italy was the last country I would have thought of. All for the reasons of, I haven't really heard of a band from Italy that stood out since I heard Sadist's Tribe. But right now in 2003, I have a hard time to remember what it sounded like. Abstract have utilized their flawless musicianship to create something new but similar to some bands you might remember from the 90's.

Abstract are a quartet that play technical metal in the vein of Cynic, Atheist, Sadist, and a more recent band people might not be familiar with, Aghora. In reference to my review of The Mist And The Morning Dew, the female vocals on this album are on the let's rock this demo out again side. Guja Piazzesi's vocals aren't quite the typical Lacuna Coil or Rain Fell Within vocals people would expect. To properly explain her vocals, think Spiral Architect's vocalist, but female. Yes that may seem like a bad comparison, but if you were to actually listen and compare them it would all click together. Plus the combination of the music and vocal style would help with making that connection. The guitar and bass are executed with precision, and the drummer has a very similar style to Sean Reinert. For being a quartet with a single guitarist, the sound is full and very rich for a fiend like myself to hear all the notes being played, perfect arpeggio sweeps, and harmonies that are on time with each other.

Promo 2002 is only two tracks, so it's hard for me to fairly judge this band. Fans of the bands I had previously mentioned should check out this Italian act. My main problem with this band is, I wanted to hear something new and refreshing and it gave me this neutral feeling. Not that it was bad, it just wasn't something like the first Opeth, or Dodheimsgard 666 International that gave me the refreshed feeling like Irish Springs. I'm going to have to give it a 3 for the reason of 3 being the middle pillar of the unholy Metal Judgment scoring system.
