  • Martyr's Review:
Just like the concept that certain people should not procreate, the same can be said for some who create music. If you're going to attempt to write something, at least know if your skills are refined and coherent enough to portray your work.

Absent Society is a metal band based out of the East Bay area of California. They describe themselves as influenced by Mudvayne, DEP, Slayer, Pantera and quite a few others. As I was listening to their self-titled demo, I was instantly and unfortunately reminded of a place in time where Spineshank, Skinlab and other nu-metal bands were prevalent on the commercial music scene. Absent Society definitely hits the nu-metal nail on the head with their slam riffs, bass drops and angst-ridden vocals. I found these tracks to be very choppy and a bit monotonous at times.

Although I wasn't very excited about this demo, there was one saving grace. The highlight of the demo was a hidden track recorded at an abandoned military base. With the organic drumming and the echoed, wailing vocals that make you think, "Is he really trashed or do we need to call in the Exorcist?" This is by far the most original material I feel Absent Society has going for them.
