  • Piss Angel's Review:
I know that a band's promo sheets are much like a resume and cover letter and that it should talk the band up, but sometimes it's just too much. Take 5 Billion Dead for example. I get this CD with a band name that speaks of mass carnage and destruction, so I'm thinking death metal. I read the promo sheets they say they have "exploded onto the music scene with an unprecedented fury rarely seen." It also tells me their demo was produced by Jason Suecof who also produced Monstrosity and Trivium. So I'm really thinking this might be a sick record and when I start it I hear spaced out guitar and singing that sounds like "Strain" was trying to be on a Fear Factory Record. It's such a letdown.

The rest of the record picks up a bit and I have to say that the guitarist actually knows how to play but he rarely gets to show it because most of the time the band is playing mid-tempo breakdown type riffs. I may even be able to dictate one of these parts through writing, let's try..."CHUG-CHUG-CHUG. CHUG-CHUG. CHU-CHUG-CHUG-CHUG. SQUEEL." That's this record pretty much all the way through. I found it boring and a terrible waste of time, but I gave them one skull because they have a few interesting parts that catch my attention, but then they lose me again. They really lost points on the lyrical content because vocalist "Strain" (how I hate stupid nicknames) writes teenager angst style lyrics with deep questions such as "why don't I fit into the world?" Oh, and he "hates the world." Later he tells us that he doesn't know how he "can deal with all the shit in this fucked up world." I'm blown away. It really makes me think, but that might not be a good thing. If you're going to write stupid lyrics at least use a vocal style that I can't understand.
