  • Musashi's Review:
Why on earth would a band go to the trouble of sending a demo and then make themselves so hard to find? 100Sound [hundred:sound] are obviously a bunch of inbred Swedes that don't seem to know better despite that they are working with some company that is supposed to help promote them.

The demo was sent in a plain white envelope without a return address. The envelope contained a single three-song demo with a simple booklet in a vinyl cover. No frills. I thought the simple Celtic/Wu Tang-ish logo looked interesting so I popped the CD in the player. Sounds good. Okay, this will make a good demo to review for this week. Now let me find out some more information regarding this band. On the back of the CD booklet is a big sticker that says, "kulturframjandet is a non-profit organisation designed to help and develop new talent. We record and promote demos with unsigned bands and artists; arrange workshops and seminars; offer advice and guidance." If they are trying to help bands, then why don't they stick a bio sheet in the envelope with demos? Why don't they write a nice little letter? Why is their website in Swedish gobbledygook and impossible to navigate? You try going to www.kulturframjandet.com and see if you can figure out what the hell is going on. I clicked everything trying to find out more info about 100Sound and was left confounded and confused.

I inspected the CD booklet much closer and found in the tiniest of fonts the URL for the 100Sound homepage. Way to promote yourselves guys! It's a fucking demo! Make it easy for people to find you if they actually like your music. Why even have a homepage or send out demos if you aren't going to shamelessly promote yourselves? Why should I have to work so hard to write something nice about a bunch of meatball eaters?

Anyway, the demo contains three songs, "Egoland," "Bury Your Vision Within" and "This Material." Of course, the songs are in order from worst to best instead of the more tried and true order of best to worst. The music reminds me of Tool and Marilyn Manson among other things. The mix leans towards low-fi, but it gives the music a raw feel. It is a metalcore version of Tool: harder, edgier but still moody and groove oriented. It is good, heavy and rocking. It's not what I would consider typical Swedish metal, but it has a heavy Swedish influence and is very radio-friendly. I could easily imagine this being pumped on K-Rock. The more I listen to the demo the more I like it. I definitely have to give the music 5 skulls.

100Sound score low in terms of presentation. I wonder if this Kulturframjandet is helping them or holding them back. Despite their ties to this organization, I suggest you give 100Sound a listen.
