I think this show was the night before the Downtime one reviewed by the Metal Judgment crew, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I got there in time to hear Arch Enemy. It was a pretty good set, though rather short (there seemed to be a lack of enthusiasm in the crowd-- when they asked for requests, hardly anyone said anything, in contrast to my usual experience with such things). Also, the bass was just way too high (as usual at metal concerts, sigh). I couldn't hear any of the lead guitar melodies that make Arch Enemy different from, say, Nile or any of these other stoopid death metal bands infesting the Northeast. Why do metal bands do that, pump out the bass so much so that all you can hear is a sort of throbbing and thumping? Pointless.

Nevermore's set was awwwwesome. Warrel Dane was in top form for this show; man, that guy is a real nutter, his eyes rolling up into his head, his nose ring and goatish beard... very weird. But he was a happy little psycho, screaming along with perfect ease and establishing a great rapport with the fans. But I really loved the rhythm guitars, which for me is the best part about Nevermore. Total off-balance chaotic thrashing progressive riffage. Unfortunately, a little moshing did go on (moshing is NOT metal, people), but everyone was smiling and having a good time. Toward the end of their set, they busted out with an old Sanctuary tune. Don't know which one, all I know is that it wasn't from Into the Mirror Black, the only Sanctuary album I own. It sounded much cooler than Sanctuary in fact sounded, of course, because of that stormy '90s sound. All in all, a pleasurable experience, and those of you who haven't caught Nevermore yet really must, at any cost.

What a funny fuckin' show. First of all, it sucked that it was Sunday night and I was exhausted and it was snowing and cold outside but I actually liked Downtime. It was small, like Coney Island High was, but had high ceilings and a disco ball. Cool. And, I was happy to be seeing two awesome bands on the same night. It wasn't even that packed either. Alas, we planted ourselves in front of the bar, which was about 10 feet from the stage. Perfect location. And when Arch Enemy began, that's when the fun started. Johan, the lead singer from Arch Enemy, asked us New Yorkers if we were ready to have our asses ripped. I was on the floor. Not to mention that the guitar player's finger was wrapped in a cast because he got it stuck in the door or something. They sounded great anyway; loud, fast, aggressive, and very Swedish. Then Nevermore, whom I had seen once before at that shitty Brooklyn venue came on an hour late. I'll sum up the show in one sentence: Warrel Dane was completely wasted. He was so drunk that he got his hair caught in his bassist's guitar. He had the audience sing half of his lyrics for him and he screwed up so badly on one song that he even acknowledged it and laughed. My friend even said that from one alcoholic to another, he was this close to passing out on stage. Ha ha. I was so entertained. And let's not forget that there were maybe about 100 people there total so body surfing and moshing simply weren't meant to be... although people tried. Yikes. I laughed all the way home.

I must go to Sweden! My only conceptions of Sweden are big-busted blonde bombshells (See Victoria Silvestedt), meatballs (See Stouffer's), and heavy metal bands (See Arch Enemy & Yngwie). Based on only these three things, I think it might be worth a trip. Arch Enemy is great. They have two shredding (I mean SHREDDING!!!) guitar players and a furious drummer. Of the two bands, I would have to give the musical vote to Arch Enemy. They have good songs with good melodies. Granted, those melodies started to get kind of cheesy after a while but I like that sort of cheese.

Nevermore definitely provided the much more entertaining show... er, I mean PARTY. Nevermore definitely broke down the barrier between Audience and Band and crossed the line from Show to Party. The singer seemed to be less than sober and was having problems remaining vertical, however, he was more than up to the task of getting the audience excited. In fact the crowd was about as excited as they could have been short of moving their bowels. The singer eventually started inviting the fans to come up on stage to sing a few lines before sending them body surfing. Nevermore definitely have the heavier tunes and have the edge when it comes to putting on a show. Together it makes for an ultra-entertaining night of metal.
