Ok, I had an unfair advantage over the rest of my friends that went to the show with me at Irving Plaza because I had already seen Mr. Bungle once before this year, at the Trocadero in Philly, and that show completely blew me away. So I was psyched to see them again. I had always been a Mr. Bungle fan, mostly because I am a huge Faith No More fan and am in love with Mike Patton’s voice and sheer musical talent. The show in NYC was truly amazing, yet again. Rumors abound that they never play the same set twice. This, I can assume, is true. Mr. Bungle’s music is decidedly non-metal, although the band has an ability to turn on a dime from Hawaiian surf and disco to metal to salsa. Mr Patton possesses a knack for mesmerizing vocal experimentation. Spanish, Latin, falsetto, and a wonderful metal growl all in one song keeps you on your toes. And yes, he does make you work for it because you just never know what’s going to happen next. They played a lot of songs from their newest album, California, and I was lucky enough to hear the beautiful and intense semi-ballad "Retrovertigo", one of my favorite songs off that album, as a closing song. Other highlights, a few random punk covers and "Desert Search for Techno Allah" from Disco Volante with the synth bass repeat hurting my ears...in a good way. But I do miss the "Girls of Porn," and the opening Indian music acid trip fest was a definite downer. Otherwise an amazing and mystical experience. Mr. Bungle are Phish for metal fans!
