Pretty decent show that was actually two combined shows (Lamb of God/God Forbid were added to the Haunted tour package). We ended up right at the front gate, dead center, as we were the second and third persons in. The club had decided to segregate the over 21s from the under 21 in opposite halves of the club, putting a net from the front gate all the way to the back. This had the effect of a half empty over 21 side, with a jam packed under 21 side.God Forbid came on first, and were much better than they were just six months ago on the same stage with Opeth and Nevermore. Good guitar work and strong vocals powered a good half hour set and generated a very positive crowd response. The band apologized for not being able to close with their customary cover of the At The Gates classic, "Blinded by Fear." Along with Lamb of God and Shadows Fall, they seem to be the brightest hope for American underground metal.
Catastrophic inspired sleep-like symptoms in just about everyone there. Seeing as how Obituary never really interested me, I did not have high expectations from the band of Trevor Peres. Apparently much of the crowd felt the same, as they generated only polite applause (at best). Their style of midtempo death metal may have been interesting in 1993, but sounded totally out of place now. After their set, their guitarist threw his guitar and other equipment around like a three year old in a temper tantrum, looking about as unprofessional as possible.
Lamb of God roused the crowd out of the Catastrophic-induced catatonic state. It seemed like a good portion of the crowd were there for them. Early into their set, the vocalist stagedived (using my head as a partial launchpad), causing about half of the net to come down. The half hour plus set allowed the band to perform almost all of their Metal Blade debut album. To make their performance even better, my girlfriend and I each caught drum sticks.
Witchery began the Swedish bloc portion of the show. Although technically good (and having the Haunted's guitarist extraordinaire Jensen in their ranks), their brand of Swedish retro-thrash failed to exite me. The fact that they ranked about a 9/10 on the cheese-o-meter didn't help matters either. Their singer was dressed like a Cradle of Filth reject, complete with corpsepaint, frilly clothing, and a belt with stakes and a mallet. On a side note, I've never seen 13 songs performed in under forty-five minutes before.
The Haunted closed out the night in true metal fashion. They drew several hundred people for the show, and all were very into the performance from the first notes of the Slayer-esque intro "Dark Intentions". They played fifteen songs, which ran about an hour. Their singer Marco was genuinely happy with the crowd response, and cracked jokes throughout the set. After someone requested "Under the Surface," he performed an a capella rendition of the chorus, complete with a little jig. Several requests for "Blinded by Fear" were made, but to no avail. Crowd pleasers were "In Vein," "Hollow Ground," and the closer "Hate Song." At the end of the set, all five band members came to the front of the stage and high fived the people up front. Bassist Jonas Bjorler was kind enough to press his bass pick into my hand. And just for waiting a few minutes, I was able to obtain the setlist from a roadie. Great show, and congrats to Jensen for being able to play full sets with two different bands (after an outfit change between the two).
The Haunted's setlist (in order):
Dark Intentions / Bury Your Dead / Chasm / Trespass / Undead / Hollow Ground / Chokehold / Leech / Bullet Hole / Revelation / In Vein / 3 Times / Silencer / Shattered / Hate Song
