My name is Hel. This is not the name I was first born with. I am a far different person than the one who owned that other name. I first drew breath in a place very far away. A place where Country Music reigned. Metal was played quietly, in dark corners, where our parents couldn’t hear. Metal was secret. Until one day, when MTV began to play the likes of RATT, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Dokken and Twisted Sister.

Then Metal began to creep out. But just a bit. Few of the best bands received recognition. Bands like Overkill, Queensryche and Metallica were still far below the public radar. And even with that modest success, the days, for Metal, grew even darker in that Country-Music-Mad place. After many unhappy years spent dreaming of escape, I was finally able to flee. Metal could be denied no more. I found a fairy-tale place. The local college radio station played nothing but Metal (except religious Sundays). I began to grow accustomed to this new place, grounded in Metal. But I soon grew restless. I had been stranded in Country-Music-Hell for far too long and I longed to see more of this new place I had found. I traveled hundreds of miles to the North. To a snowy, gloomy land. A land where Metal, again, had no home. I did not despair, however. I began to explore this cold land. It was a land of evils, a land of temptation, of things I’d never seen before. I became lost in these oddities. I allowed the people I met there to tell me that Blues Traveler, The Doors and "Led Zep" were cool to listen to. I followed them, but not for long. A strange thing happened to me. I heard the music. Then I was cast to hell. There I was shamed for believing the naysayers. I could not return to that cold wasteland as the person I'd become. I needed to be reborn. And I was. My sorrow forged my soul in its flames. And I was named again. My new name, my true name, is Hel. Chosen as a reminder.

I was named for the legendary goddess of Helheim, the land of death – where I was taken and punished among the dead for my heinous act of non-belief. The land where I was reborn. Reborn, and sent out to fight. I will spend the rest of my days fighting battles in the war to bring Metal to glory.
