Requiem's Review:
With a good portion of the world hot on the heels of the Motley Crue reunion, I figured I'd give my 2 cents on their best album, Too Fast For Love. In 1982, metal was still a very new thing. Besides Sabbath and Priest, there weren't a whole lot of bands doing the metal thing just yet. Sure there were lots, but nowhere compared to where it is today. A young Motley Crue decided to release its debut, and offered a stage show with pentagrams, skulls and smoke; virtually every mother's nightmare.Sure the band are known for their newer hits like "Dr. Feelgood," "Girls, Girls, Girls" and countless others, but on their debut there was a sense of raw energy, newness and untapped creativity that had not yet been tampered with. So instead of the glam image they later adorned, 1982 had the Crue going for a rock meets punk attitude. For 1982, this was rebellious, fun and one of the heaviest things we'd heard yet. Album opener, "Live Wire" is a lively number, made more popular by the inclusion in many a Shadows Fall live set. "Come on and Dance" has more cowbell than "Don't Fear the Reaper" and one of the coolest breakdowns we've heard yet. A young Vince Neil showed early promise as a vocalist, Tommy Lee had ultra crafty tempos, Mick Mars ripped some fine solos and Nikki Sixx even threw in some cool bass fills here and there. They made sure to include the essential ballad via "On with the Show" and showed the world they had what it took to take on the world.
As we would later find out, that is essentially what they did via Shout at the Devil, Dr, Feelgood, Girls, Girls, Girls and more. But this debut was always my personal fave, as it showed the eagerness of a brand new band with high hopes, ambition and the young party lifestyles that you need to make it through rock and roll. If you are partaking in this Motley Crue resurgence, do yourself a favor and check out the album that got them on the map.
