A classic of progressive metal mastery, Dream Theater's second album (the first with their better-known singer, James LaBrie) displays the entire band's ultimate excellence on their instruments. From the opening notes of "Pull Me Under" you can feel the sonic storm brewing. Containing five songs over 7 minutes long, the band obviously did not have the words "radio-friendly" in mind when making this album. Individually, every member shows off amazing skill, from Petrucci's lightning-fast, crisp licks, to Portnoy's madman pounding and LaBrie's operatic singing. But the real magic happens when they come together. The music hits you like a hurricane of sound, swirling in chaos, yet coming together on a beat. Absolutely amazing, an the epitome of band members mastering their craft, in perfect synch, note for note. The only thing more amazing: they do it even better live.
