  • Hel's Review:
1996 witnessed the release of Horror Wrestling. What was most remarkable about Drain S.T.H. was not that they were Swedish, but that they were all women. Sure, all-female bands were not new to the metal world, but until this point they had most frequently been novelty acts, largely unable to play their instruments, let alone able to write a decent song. Drain S.T.H. took this notion and punched continent-sized holes in it. These were women – but women that understood metal.

The vocal delivery was “clean” but very unlike the prominent soprano-style most female vocalists adhered to then, and which many still do today. Instead, Maria’s whisky alto redefined the rules. This album was one of the few I was able to get away with playing in my office back then, and invariably, whomever I told that it was a woman singing stared at me in disbelief while they absorbed the fact.

As great as the vocal delivery was, and even as excellent as the rest of the musicians in the band were, the songwriting was the true centerpiece of this act. The songs were diverse, heavy, and often downright catchy. To this day, I have not fully gotten them out of my head. Alas, these queens of metal have since parted ways, something that saddens me to this day. So for those of you who are convinced that Kittie is the best female band to have ever graced metal, think again.
