World War II produced the "Big Three": Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin. In the 1940's, these men stood against the evil forces of Nazism as leaders of the free world. Okay, Stalin made Hitler look like a bitch, but you get the point. In the 1980's, Germany turned the tables and produced the "Big Three," the "Holy Trinity" of Teutonic thrash: Sodom, Destruction, and Kreator. These bands stood united against the evil forces of... imported beer? I was going to say "glam" metal, but the poodle do's on the cover of Sentence of Death made me think otherwise.

Infernal Overkill was Destruction's first full-length record, and what a slam-fest it is. This is noisy, chaotic, early-Slayerish metal without any social graces whatsoever, and it bats you upside the head and says "Actung!" Not that I've heard a lot of 80's German thrash, but between this one and the Sodom and Kreator classics we've covered, this is my least favorite of the bunch. Sodom has more groove and Kreator is more of a well-oiled machine. Still, this is THRASH we're talking about, and IO gets points just for being Janet... Ms. Jackson, 'cause it's nasty. While being a bit too unfocused for me, Overkill is, at least, not lazy. This baby has more twists and turns than a waterpark slide. "Thrash Attack," "Antichrist" and "Black Death" have their moments. "Bestial Invasion" appears to be a fan favorite, and it's mine, too. That powerful, off-kilter riff in the verses just gets to you. Destruction? Yeah, that fits.
