Death's Review:
I first heard about this record from a letter to the editor in Hit Parader magazine. The dude was raving about the sickest band around, simply named Death, with an album called Scream Bloody Gore. Wow, I thought. That's original, I thought sarcastically. Somehow, the idea of some spaz just trying to be as "scary" as he could be just didn't sound that exciting. Then I heard the music. What had at first seemed like a joke band, now sounded like a musical revolution. This was beyond thrash. This was brutal. Chris Reifert's drumming was pummeling. Songs like "Zombie Ritual" maintained minimal technicality and catchiness with some of the simplest yet neck-snappingly killer riffs I had heard in quite some time. I learned the shit on guitar right away. I was hooked. Evil Chuck rapidly became a metal icon. Death metal was born.
In 2003, Chuck Schuldiner is dead but his influence lives on. Traces of his legacy can be found scattered throughout the metal genre. Although Chuck and Death morphed and evolved with every record, there never really was ever a bad Death album. Each of them can now be considered genre classics in their own right. How many of your favorite bands can you say that about? This one started it all. The liner notes sum it all up nicely, thanking the likes of Borivoj Krgin, Max and Sepultura, Killjoy and Necrophagia, Monte Connor, Dark Angel, Kreator, Kurt and D.R.I., "All Non-Trendy Underground Fanzines," and the "European Scene for Your Killer Support." Such was underground metal, circa 1987. Death toured for the album, playing Milwaukee Metalfest and debuting new tune "Pull the Plug". This was only the beginning of many great things to come.
