Hel's Review:
While trolling around my collection one day, looking for classic album ideas, I had a rather shocking revelation. Whisper Supremacy is now old enough to qualify as a classic! I was stunned. And then it dawned on me that I have been missing a golden opportunity to do a classic review for this band for some time now. So the question became, Blasphemy Made Flesh or None So Vile? It really was no decision at all, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for the first releases (as a demo - one I don't even have, mind you - Ungentle Exhumation doesn't count) of my favorite bands. But really, the improvements in production and songwriting made on None So Vile make clear this record is the one everyone should go back and rediscover immediately.Lord Worm's final opus with the band is widely considered to be their best album. I can say this with certainty, as I have had conversations on the topic at metalfests, and this was the answer given by most people. So it must be true. Similarly, I also know that most fans claim to prefer Lord Worm's style to Mark DiSalvo's. Personally, though I like both, I would also have to choose the unintelligible pure death delivery of Lord Worm over DiSalvo's more understandable hardcore-tinged style. But really, having seen the new vocalist, Martin Lacroix, perform live once, I have high hopes for him delivering the best of both worlds - a pure death delivery that is almost understandable. At any rate, we all know Cryptopsy isn't really about the vocals at all. It's really always been about one thing: Flo Mounier's drumming.
The moment the first bars of "Crown of Horns" kick in, the drums immediately hit overdrive, proving to all who listen that this is something special. It is truly astounding that a human can drum this way, and it strikes me as completely logical and reasonable that he is working on a drum instruction video. If I were a drummer, I'd buy it! Hell, I'm thinking of buying it just to have another chance to watch him and prove to myself he's really flesh and blood. Even though I've seen him perform before, it's just one of those things. He's just that phenomenally good. Jon Levasseur is a phenomenal musician in his own right and Eric Langlois certainly proves he has the chops to keep up; both add their own incredible performances to both this recording, and also all those that have come after.
For my money, Cryptopsy is one of the best death metal bands around. It's been far too long since their last album And Then You'll Beg, but a new one should be out sometime soon. It's just gotta be! So until then, revisit this gem, check out some of the other old stuff, or just get the highlights on None So Live, but dammit, make sure you listen to some Cryptopsy!
