Lugubrious's Review:
We acknowledge many bands as legends. These certain bands we put on a different level than most bands. They are immortal, and loved by many. We can all say with ease that Emperor, Dissection, Morbid Angel, Slayer, old Metallica, and others deserve this status. Sadly though, one band has been overlooked. The Crown are, to put it simply, on this level, and the whole metal world should be ashamed to not recognize them as the metal gods they are. This is not your run-of-the-mill metal band, or a Lindberg side-project, or even just another Swedish metal band. Folks, listen closely, this is The Crown, and they are one of the greatest metal bands to ever exist. It all started with an album called The Burning, when they were still going by Crown of Thorns. Originally released in 1995, it was re-released in 2002 under the current name The Crown. They released two albums under the former moniker, and this was to set the tone for an amazing career. From the opening seconds the listener can hear this is something special. As the riff hooks your spine, and the chorus etches itself within your mind, you realize all too late that you can never escape. Suddenly the most chaotic yet well structured noise you have ever heard blasts out of the speakers, and before you know it you are screaming along with the chorus. Sure, many bands can play at this ferocious speed, yet few do it so well.
This is a band that can simply do it all. From the eerie "Candles," which has one of the best riffs ever, to the insane speed of "Everborn," every style is mastered on this album. Take the best of Black, Death, and Thrash, throw it in a blender, add a drop of pure hatred, and spit some of that whiskey you been drinking onto the pile. Maybe now you are getting the idea. Every track melts into your body, leaving a fingerprint that will not be wiped away. Riff after riff destroys your eardrums, and a drummer who alone deserves to be called a legend in our beloved metal scene rips up the kit in a style all his own. What more could any metal fan want?
Sadly, The Crown lived in the shadow of the Swedish scene. While many metal fans know who they were, they never reached the level that they deserved. We all know they called it quits last year, and sadly many of us, including me, will never have a chance to see them perform and witness their majesty. What we do have is some of the greatest metal to ever be recorded, and that is all we can hold onto. May The Crown rest in pieces, and all of us who know how spectacular they were will have the last laugh, for we few have heard the best the metal world has to offer.
