Hel's Review:
Amorphis is a fantastic, vital band that I love as much today as I did back when. Their recent work has evolved away from much of the style found here, although the astute student of Amorphis will recognize some hallmarks which remain. On the whole, however, these days they are far less death metal and far more ambiently heavy. Regardless, every last bit of it all is amazing and if you do not yet know this band, do yourself a favor and take the time.Tales is their seminal effort, in my opinion. While utilizing nearly every musical variant possible at one point or another, they created an amazing amalgam of sound and beauty. For the most part, it is death metal with many European techniques utilized. But it also contains the folklore and creativity for which this band is mostly known.
This is a work of epic proportions that every good metalhead should at least have heard. There are a lot of wonderful metal things that have come out of Europe, and these boys from Finland are no exception. If you just have to skip to the most incredible tune on the album, head straight for "Black Winter Day" and prepare yourself for your demise.
