  • Abyss's Review:
I started listening to this album on the same day that I heard that its producer, Nasum's Mieszko Talarczyk, was confirmed dead in the tsunami disaster (R.I.P.), so I'm feeling a little sentimental. The fact is that its hard for me not to hear Nasum in a lot of grindcore acts, and Rotten Sound makes it even more obvious. Much like Nasum, Rotten Sound can effectively meld chaotic grind with a more traditional, brutal death metal sound, resulting in an effect that is quite satisfying in many respects.

"One word review: Blink! (missed it)"

If there is one thing I find annoying on this record, it's not really the songwriting, but the layout of the album. It consists of very short, sporadic songs which is nothing new in the genre, but unlike a band like Nasum, the tracks don't meld together that well. I've always appreciated Nasum because if you listen to three tracks in a row, it sounds like a traditional song (Pig Destroyer is also good at doing this), here everything is much less fluid.

There is some cool stuff on here. "Soil," "Western Cancer" and "Mass Suicide" all show this band's knack for hook and energy. And while a lack of continuity may be a problem for me, the material itself isn't. Unfortunately, there isn't nearly enough material on this disc to warrant a strong recommendation. Clocking in at a little over twenty minutes, many who pay full price for this disc will feel ripped off. Sure, grindcore albums are stereotypically brief, but if you can't put together forty minutes of music, wait until you have more material. One word review: Blink! (missed it)

    Death's Review:
    "This is a good album."
The Scandinavian grindcore scene lost one of its leaders in the recent Tsunami disaster, but Exit producer and Nasum frontman Mieszko Talarczyk lives on through his music. Rotten Sound tap a related vein as did Nasum; downtuned, heavy, pummeling slow riffs, anchoring lightning-fast blast-beat grind riffs and surrounding by a decent and forceful production. Rotten Sound employ more of a gore-grind aesthetic than did Nasum, but the brutally is generally aimed in the same diection. Still, the riffs don't always land with as much of a violent impact as I would have hoped for - the real, visceral payoff isn't alwys there. The speed, the aggression, the turn-on-a-dime tempo shifts -- all of them are present and competently executed. This is a good album, but there is other good stuff like this out there too. These guys seem like they would be fun to see live. The album is definitely cool, but I'm also listening to the new Bloodbath this week, and I'd much rather be listening to that.

    Hel's Review:
Rotten Sound has been around for over ten years but, alas, this is the first opportunity I have had to sit down and really listen to one of their albums. Given how much I adore grindcore it is certainly long overdue. Unfortunately, there has been some amazing grindcore released recently, so my standards have become impossibly high and this is a difficult situation for a band to enter into. Still, Rotten Sound have lived up to their reputation and Exit has secured a place in my collection.

"The songs kept my interest and I found the performances impressive."

Brilliantly produced by grindcore mastermind, Mieszko Talaczyk, who was taken from us so tragically in the tsunami disaster last December, the album kicks of like a shot from a loaded gun. In fact, one of the first things you hear on the record is the sound of a trigger being cocked, and the artwork is themed around a rifle, so there is an overall concept present and it is well executed. The songs kept my interest and I found the performances impressive. All in all, I was very pleased by my first experience with Rotten Sound.
