It's stating the obvious to say that a huge amount of today's underground metal would not exist if not for Venom. Their first three records did for the 80s metal scene what the first four Sabbath discs did for the 70s. To this day, I've heard nothing rawer than Welcome to Hell. And that is Venom's dilemma. Can they compete with their own back catalogue, much less the likes of Marduk and Cannibal Corpse? After hearing Resurrecton, I'd have to say no. This does not have anywhere near the impact of "The Classic 3".
But this is an acceptable record if you can get past that. In fact, the band has musically never been better. Mantas' guitar is on a much higher plane than anything he has done before, with some really excellent soloing. New drummer Antton is great, adding a whole new dimension to the band with his tight aggression. And Cronos is still Cronos, showing a bit more vocal skill but still growling as gruffly as ever.
Songs are a mixed lot. "Pain" and "Black Flame" are good speedy bashers while both "Vengeance" and "War Against Christ" have some really majestic mid-sections with great solos. But then there's the plodding title track, an almost industrial crawl that doesn't fit their style at all. And "All There Is Fear" is one of their worst ever, way too commercial and conventional sounding. This really is a wimpout.
Another thing that bugs me are the pathetically easy choruses, which are usually just shouted song titles, such as on "Thirteen" and "Disbeliever". Come on, you guys aren't Dream Theater, but put a little more effort into this area!
Resurrection is a good little album, but anyone expecting the raw fury of Welcome To Hell or Black Metal will be disappointed.
