When Max Cavalera left the legendary Sepultura, the remaining members had a base for reviving the band, but they couldnt replace what Max adds to any band he is in, Soul. Thats why Soulfly is much better than the new Sepultura and this album proves my point, it has a few surprises, like the guest appearance by Sean Lennon. This is kind of disturbing but its a pleasant surprise nonetheless. They still keep the characteristics that make Soulfly stand above the over saturated nu-metal scene, the tribal elements and south american influences. The record is pretty solid in most areas but has a major weakness, lyrically it gets repetitive and unimaginative. If the lyrics were a little more mature this album would be almost perfect for the nu-metal sympathizers. For those of you who blindly depise nu-metal, I suggest you listen to this and see if you honestly like it, I think some of you might be surprised on what you'll find out.The top moments are the tracks "Pain", "terrorist" and "Soulfly II".

Musashi's Review (9/21/00):
I figured I should chime in with some thoughts about this album. I really dig this album. It's been a good album to work out to. Very aggressive. I like the Brazilian influences: the percussion and the Portuguese lyrics. When Toby Wright and Andy Wallace team up to produce and mix an album chances are it's gonna be pretty heavy. Primitive is no exception. The album is very heavy. The other thing I like about the album is the fact that it still feels kind of raw. It's not all about the polish. You can still hear the imperfections. I feel dirty and ashamed after listening to this album. I think, in this case, it's a good thing.
This is one of the few Roadrunner CDs I've listened to lately that doesn't have a bad cover of some 80s hit. For that reason alone, it is much more appealing. Of course, Sean Lennon makes an appearance on the album that leaves me scratching my head. Nonetheless, this CD has found its way into my CD player several times. I recommend buying this CD and some creatine and hitting the gym!
