Shadows fall is a band that pushes the boundries of metal and hardcore. With a touch of In-Flames and turmoil Shadows Fall have all the elements to make an outstanding band. The guitars are very heavy but melodic in a fucked up way. Vocalist Brian Fair can scream you into submission and can sing in a catchy way. Shadows Fall's old vocalist Phil Labonte was a very good singer but didn't have the vocal range that Brian has. The band is by far the most talented in metalcore\extreme metal today. If the band continues to progress they will change all of the metal\hardcore underground.

I come from a town with a really big hardcore scene. I don't like hardcore, but because every local band is hardcore, if a metal show comes this way, rest assured the opening band is a hardcore band. I've seen Shadows Fall probably a hundred times. They used to play here a lot with different hardcore bands. I was always surprised the hardcore kids liked them becasue they have more of a metal influence. This album sheds all the hardcore sound this band might have had. It's a straight melodic metal album with a mix of low end death vocals, and cleanly sung stuff with acoustic guitars. The songs are memorable, great guitar, and inventive vocal patterns. Very recommended!!!

Finally, an American band proves that they can play melodic death metal. Shadows Fall keeps it interesting with acoustic guitars here and there, varying vocal styles, and a tight amalgamation of many metal styles. Frankly, I don't understand all the comparisons to hardcore crossover bands, as Shadows Fall sounds more Gothenburg than NYC. Stand out tracks are many and include "Crushing Belial," "To Ashes," "The First Noble Truth," and the title track. A truly monumental debut.

While, I have never criticized anybody before for writing a review, I do feel that Joey's review below was a bias slam against a good band. He says that since the lead singer of Shadows Fall is influenced by a non-metal band, Better than Ezra, that no one should like this band. Well, I think that this guy sucks for saying that. But, I'm not going to go on a witchhunt, this time around, I just needed to get it off my chest. So, here's what I think of Shadows Fall: excellent. I love these guys every time I listen to them. I love the switching of vocal styles and the combination. I love the vocal as well.
Fillers? Fillers my ass. I don't hear no repeats, no same riff over and over again (folks, this band isn't Fear Factory.) We got time changes, cool arrangements, acoustic interludes during songs, solos. Would you ask more?
The best songs are "Of Our Blood," "Fleshold," "To Ashes," "The First Noble Truth" (my first Shadows Fall song), and "Reveal in my Loss."

Shadows Fall are nothing orginal. Take In Flames and The Haunted, with some really bad vocal styles and you're there. The singer says he's influenced by BETTER THEN EZRA, a not tooo metal band. So fuck him and do yourself a favor, save yourself $16 or spend it on some real metal. This album has too many fillers.
