Perhaps the name should be changed to "Underkill" since this damned band is constantly under-rated, always the under-dog, has remained largely under-ground, and most certainly is under-appreciated.Why is it that of the "second wave" of U.S. metal that Overkill and Testament (both victims in 1994-1995 of the Atlantic Records scheme to go mainstream and drop all metal acts) never have received their due? These bands have consistently released albums as talented as Slayer and Anthrax and certainly more metal than Metallica and Megadeth in the post-Atlantic era, but the big break has remained elusive to both bands.
Ranting aside, Coverkill is Overkill's tribute to those bands who influenced them beyond mere rumblings of "Man, that album was killer." The artists covered here made the band say "Damn, I gotta form a band and play some of that..."
Some great tracks are there, including Black Sabbath's "Changes" which uses a 12-string bass guitar to do the introduction rather than a tired, old piano. If you like cover tunes as much as I do, and as much as artists who do them, get this. It's a "can't miss."
If you don't like cover tunes or the opportunity to see a band inject some new soul into an old song, stay far, far away.

Are not people supposed to get wiser as they get older? It's very obvious that Overkill is OVER! And they had a superb run, no doubt. They have really never recovered from the departure of Bobby Gustafson , although Horrorscope is quite impressive. They are like watching a 45 year old quarterback that just can't get the job done anymore. Overkill is just trying to make a living at the the expense of their long time devoted fans. King Diamond is quoted as saying that he will keep going as long as he and the band feel they are still producing quality music (AND THEY ARE!!!!), otherwise it's time to hang it up. Who knows, maybe Overkill's next album will blow everybody away, if I were a betting man, though, I would say that they throw together another pile of crap and just hope they make enough money to pay for their next masterpiece.
