Ever wonder what Dissection would sound like if they had keyboards? Well, then get the new Old Man's Child. It's a perfect mix between Dissection and Dimmu Borgir. The Dissection influences are really obvious, if you have listened to Storm of the Light's Bane to death. So what you get is a melodic black/death album, nothing original per se, but extremely well executed and tight. And since I just love Dissection, this had to be on my must buy list. It has everything - tight melodic and thrashy guitars, excellent blastbeats and super production from Peter Tagtgren. You may call it mainstream, untrue or whatever, but it still kicks butt.

After 1997's The Pagan Prosperity with such amazing tracks as "Millenium King" and "My Demonic Figures," it is almost impossible for OMC to create anything better than that masterpiece. But Revelation... comes pretty close. The atmosphere is not as cold as Prosperity but the production is tight, with hard drums and layered guitars. Keyboards are reminiscent of previous albums but tend to remind me of Dimmu Borgir, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! The opening track "Phantems Of Mortem Tales," is probably my favorite and contains a not so straighforward, fast rock beat and a shimmering keyboard breakdown that is simply amazing... as only OMC could create. "In Black Endless Void" starts off with a warning keyboard intro, slams into blasting black metal, then immediateley shifts into a riff that crawls along the fretboard. The biggest departure from the general OMC sound is "Obscure Divine Manifestation" which is without a doubt, one of the heaviest tracks I've heard by a "black metal" band in a long time. It is slow, sludgy, with cosmic lyrics and thick guitars. I'll admit that some tracks aren't as awesome, but they still find their own place on the album.

I know that we are only half way through 2000, but this is already on my top 10. Don't be fooled!!!! If someone tells you that OMC are nothing more than black metal they are dead wrong. This is metal with black elements and musical twists. In short it is a great album buy a phenomenal band.

Standout tracks: "Phantems of Mortem Tales," "In Black Endless Void," "Obscure Divine Manifestation"
