I'm just going to start off by saying that this is a well-done album. I have their second album, Black Art and it really didn't impress me that much. It's just boring. But Upon the Shores.. is a great improvement. Crunching, somewhat technical metal with sweeping keyboards and gritty vocals. I wouldn't call this a doom record as most catalogs classify it as, but it's not happy. Put it this way, if you've ever heard Sentenced before you know they don't write very dark music but 90% of the songs are about killing themselves. Well, this is similar. The music is somewhat progressive (by no means dark) and the lyrics are kind of anguished but not depression-inducing. The keyboards are rather symphonic and are really prominent amidst the other instruments. I like this album... it's definitely more interesting than their previous material.
