This album has been highly criticised for not being a return to Rust. Mustaine never said he would "return to Rust" anyway, and if he did everyone would have complained anyway that he went from Risk to that, saying he only plays metal when popular, ANYWAY. There are 12 songs on this album, if you don't like "Disconnect" then you are a fuckin whiner, a critic not a fan. "The World Needs a Hero"-- okay, so this one is like a commercial one, but it's a sik true metal song (not thrash, but at least true metal!), "Motopsycho" is another commercial one but it rocks nice and simply. "1000 Times Goodbye" is a fast song with a SIKK solo from Dave, could have done without the voicovers from She Wolf. "Burning Bridges" is another pure metal song, I don't see any flaw with this one, solo is exceptional. "Promises" was not needed on this album, but even Dave writes a ballad-- it's nice and sad. "Warhorse"-- if you don't like this song you just don't like heavy metal. "Losing My Senses" is commercialish and not needed ("Motopsycho" is a good commercial song). "Dread," okay, it sounds a bit like "Sweating Bullets," but come on, at least Dave's not copying himself from Risk, I don't even think it sounds like it that much, again if you don't like the middle to end soloing you must be a Streisand fan or something. I consider "Silent Scorn" and "Return to Hanger" like one song. This one isn't as technical as the original, it has simpler riffs but they are more heartfelt, the soloing crushes my cerebrum. "When" is a better song than "Am I Evil" and "Ktulu" or whatever they fuckin' compared it to.So there you have it, 12 songs, six pure fuckin' awesome songs, 1 crafty instrumental that complements "Return to Hangar", three commercial type ones but still heavy metal!!! not risk and a ballad. That's pretty good, man! In the world we're in with all this nu, rap, alt and whatever metal, us true metalheads must stay together and not critisize our own. OK Dave fucked up on Risk, but he is being honest about it. Don't knock fuckin' Megadeth, go and knock Limp Bizkit or that thing, Manson.
The Megadeth Sydney show ripped my brains out through my fuckin ears!!!!!!!!! Fuck they played some old skool shit! Death to posers!!!!

The first time I heard it I was like "Yeah, cool, let's see what happens." But after having listened to it like 100 times by now, I guess it is not what I expected, but not only that-- it shows what I didn't ever want to accept in the first place: Megadeth (or Dave's Project)... I don't want to say the overused "sucks" expression but... yeah, here we go, it sucks. But it doesn't suck in the way you're thinkin', it sucks because when you have been a hardcore Megafan for a pretty long time, you get the "ability" to know when you are being ripped off. For me a record like Risk isn't a rip off 'cause there were no promises or "back to Rust in Peace" quotes behind it. I personally didn't expect an RIP 2; I don't know why Dave couldn't keep up the same style he had developed on Cryptic. There are many other facts that make this album a fake. Pitrelli's soloing or contributions to the record are either or typical or none. The sound quality is very low.
Just to finish I would like to say that Mustaine in his intention to be a "hero" forgot what a band is: not a bunch of guys playing his stuff, but a band makin' music.
PD: what is this WHEN crap??? Kutulu-meets-am I evil? God, please. Fifteen years after and he is still having "Metallica-complex"????

I've been surprised with the reaction the new Megadeth album has been receiving. Is it the best Megadeth album? No, but in my opinion it is still a good metal album. Some songs, I would admit, are pretty dumb, like "Moto Psycho." I really like "Burning Bridges," especially when it breaks into the solo with the double bass going (it kinda reminds me of the begining of "Into the Lungs of Hell"), and I also like the new version of "Hanger 18." My only real complaint about the album is the guitar sound isn't that great. It should be heavier. It sounds like a crappy DOD pedal that he is using. I'm hoping that this is just the start of great metal Megadeth to come instead of that terrible pop attempt.

Well, as the huge fan of Megadeth that I am, I just had to take a moment and write about the anger I have for this piece of crap. After Risk, the only thing that could have given me a little hope for Megadeth was a TRUE album, not a completely no-soul record. What I'm trying to say is that after such a very good album like Cryptic, and the shitty album that was Risk, Dave couldn't keep the style he was evolving with (Cryptic), but he had to come with a very BAD attempt to be metal again with such wrong songs like "1000 Times Goodbye" or this crappy Ktulu-am I evil crap ("When"). I love Youthanasia and Countdown, also Cryptic, but this asshole that is Dave, just because he does whatever people tell him to, couldn't keep on the natural and excellent evolution his music was going through. So now the true followers of his band, us, have to deal with metal wannabes like "Return to Hangar" and ballads with no purpose, on a record that shouldd have been the best.
Just when I was thinking that my metal hero was coming back he puts out this return to crap-pitrellisucks-ellefsondoesn'twriteanysongs-album. I still dream about another Rust in Peace, even knowing that if even Maiden, with all the gang together, couldn't make a decent album, who can??????????

While it's no Rust In Peace and it's a hell of a lot better than anything since Youth, so that puts it in the same ballpark as Countdown. Its not as original as Countdown but it's nice to see them go back to something older than Cryptic Writings. It took a few spins to get used to but it was better than I expected. It's a shame Marty and Nick are gone, Marty's solos will be missed by this mega Megadeth fan. The best songs are "Burning Bridges" and "Return to the Hangar", while nowhere near "Hangar 18" but, like they said, it's nice to hear the old "Military Intelligence..." line again. "Disconnect" is a good song with a nice little solo but other then that, it reminds me of "Trust." If you liked Megadeth's albums up until Cryptic Writings, you can't go wrong with The World Needs a Hero.

Dave is a worthless liar. End of story. If he can sit there and with a straight face call this "Rust in Peace 2," then he's either delusional or a complete fucking liar. If Dave's wrist hurt playing "Return to the Hangar", he should get it checked because that song is not fast or heavy. What kills me though is that these songs SUCK. If they were well-written, I'd like them regardless of how heavy they are. But Dave, unless writing kick-ass Thrash, is not a good songwriter. "Promises" is just horrid (thanks for the strings Dave). A lot of them sound like intros. You wait for them to get crankin', kick into double-time, but they NEVER do ("Losing My Senses" is a great example of this).
And talk about Cheesy! Dave, take note, your whisper/snarl is NOT threatening. So please don't take up THREE minutes of a song ("When," which would have sucked anyway) with it.
It's good to hear Dave's still obsessed with Metallica, what with stealing "Holier than Thou," adding some "Sweating Bullets" to come up with "Dread..." Apparently, Dave's also been listening to Bow Wow Wow, because the title track, which is about... Axl Rose?! (yeah, HE'S a real hero) sounds like "I Want Candy," with Dave snarling over it.
Not all of this album sucks. "Disconnect" is like CTE-era Deth, a well-written, mid-tempo hard rock song. "Warhorse" is good, "Silent Scorn" is a well-done instrumental, and "Return to the Hangar" is... well a sequel to "Hangar 18". Even Dave couldn't fuck that up.
Basically, take the cheesy, heavier moments from Risk ("The Doctor is Calling"), re-write "Breadline" a couple of times, add 2 or 3 decent hard rock Cryptic Writings-style hard rock (NOT THRASH) songs, and you've got TWNAH. And it sucks.

Though the Judgment Committee seem to be a tad disappointed with these release from the Kings of Thrash, it is quite a good release. In fact it is a very good album. The album's sound is basically a summary of everything Megadeth has done over the last ten years, from the Thrash Masterpieces of Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction to the commercial crap that was Risk.
Undoubtedly the best song on this album is "Recipe for Hate...Warhorse." The first part of this song oozes bile and hatred, while the second speeds up into more traditional Megadeth. Other highlights on this album include "Return to the Hangar" (sequel to the classic "Hangar 18"), "1000 Times Goodbye" and the ballad "Promises," complete with a string section.
One song that I believe has been seriously underrated is "Losing My Senses." This song may hark back to the dark days of Risk, but it is actually a good song with some very insightful lyrics.
Overall there are no bad songs on this album. True it isn't as full on in your face as us old fans would like, it is still a very solid release that should appeal to anyone who is a fan of melodic heavy/thrash metal.

I have been a Deth-Head from the beginning, and when I heard "Risk" I was shakin' my head worried that they were following in Metallica's footsteps. After reading all the interveiws and waiting for the new CD to come out... I was floored. THE CD SUCKED BIG TIME!!!! And yes I was screaming. Never would I ever think that Megadeth would screw up so bad! I don't know who pointed them in the direction they're in, but they need a well deserved ass-kicking! I'm almost ready to drop them from my list of metal bands and go elsewhere. I know that bands need to reach out their musical ways, but this is too far for them. I know they have the right to do it, but it makes this fan doubt their lasting in the hard-core place of METAL!
