Sons of Thunder has some flaws, but somehow, those make the CD more endearing. The strength is in the execution, with straight ahead, in-your-face guitar blended with soaring vocals and complex keyboards. The sounds mix beautifully, leaving something new to hear every time you pop in the CD.The story isn't especially great, but I don't think it is meant to be. It is a loose framework to give the songs a bit of continuity, rather than a rigid plotline. And in this loose sense, the story works just right.
Sons of Thunder is perfectly mixed, it was worth the extra effort of the band to remix the tapes after rejecting Neil Kernon's initial mix. The final result is heavier, and harsher, than their last full CD, Return to Heaven Denied, and the overall results might almost seem inferior. But what points are lost for decreased melodicism are made up through Labyrinth not simply repeating themselves. If they can fuse the sounds of Return to Heaven Denied and Sons of Thunder on their next disk, the results will move up from 4 skulls to 5, from great to out and out amazing!
