I must admit it took me a while to decide to buy this album. I was not that impressed by Dance of December Souls and kinda disappointed by Discouraged Ones but loved Brave Murder Day. A friend of mine told me to give it a try for it was much better than Discouraged Ones. The first few listens proved him wrong. I couldn't get into this album at all!! I hated some of the vocal lines and thought some of the songs pretty much sucked.
With time this album grew on me and I must admit it is very strong release. I still think some the vocal lines suck (as in the song "We Must Bury You") but in general is very good and I recommend it. There are some very good melodies, especially in the choruses and the album engages a deep somber atmosphere.
PD: Anyway, I think the label that states "Probably the best Peaceville album ever" is not correct.

This is my first Katatonia. I decided to get this album from all the great reviews and I thought it would be a good way to diversify my collection a little. After all I read about the album and then listening to it I was surprised. I find it much more metal than I would have imagined. It is so heavy, with almost all depressing minor chords. The vocals are quite good too, not as good as Mikael Akerfeldt's clean vocals but real close. I really like this album and find it is a good way to listen to something that is rock but metal at the same time.

It took a few listens before Last Fair Deal Gone Down started to make sense to me. This album differs from Katatonia's previous albums, the band experiments with electronic sounds and drum loops to extend their melancholic form of metal. But there's no doubt that this is Katatonia, you still have songs that remind you of old days (Discouraged Ones) like "Chrome" and "The Future Of Speech," but the new songs, while still being melancholic, also bring warmth to their identities (Dispossession). There are also some atypical Katatonia songs on Last...: "We Must Bury You" is a short song with drum loops and very heavy guitars, "Passing Bird" is well a very odd song but I've come to enjoy it, "Sweet Nurse" could be the hit single with its friendly chorus. As for the lineup, two new members are added, on the bass there's Mattias Norrman who is Fred Norrman's little brother, and on the drums there's Daniel Liljekvist who really does an excellent job-- just listen to his angry drumming in "Chrome." The vocals of Jonas Renkse are top notch, sounding as melancholic as ever, his voice is perfect for this kind of music and the great guitar duo known as Nystrøm/Norrman still amaze me. The sound is not as heavy as it was on the neckbreaking Tonight´s Decision, which is something I didn't care much for, it sounds more like a rock sound. Oh well, there's always something to pick at. Since this album is more lighthearted, I guess "Brave Murder Day" still remains their bleakest and best effort to date, nevertheless Last... is a great album with something new and some splendid artwork. Last Fair Deal Gone Down gets 4 skulls.
