Great album. They become more awesome in their latest album, Sons of Northern Darkness.

Eschewing the more epic elements of the godly At the Heart of Winter, Immortal has returned from the icy regions of Blashyrk with Damned in Black. The band seems to integrate more elements of Battles in the North, into the mix this time, opting to all but abandon the clean, icy interludes. Peter Tagtgren is once again behind the boards, proving that he is THE extreme metal producer. My only complaint is that the album is more of a regression than a progression. But hey, someone has to carry the torch for straight up blackness, and Immortal is steadily proving itself to be the Motorhead of the Norwegian scene. Damned in Black scores high with me for its catchy riffs, precise drumming, raspy vocals, and utterly grim atmosphere. If nothing else, Immortal has carved out its own niche in the metal world- when you hear an Immortal song, there's no mistaking who it is. And that's an accomplisment in a scene filled with so much mediocrity. Plus, Damned in Black sounds perfect when you're grimming out with your metal brothers and many bottles of your favorite grim and frostbitten beverage. Get this album.

Immortal have come through with an amazing album this year that will appeal to a wider audience (something older Immortal fans may dislike.) It's definitely an odd album and it does take a few spins in the CD player before it starts to grow on you. I wouldn't consider this release as particularly black metal, as say a Battles in the North or Pure Holocaust, but it is a decidedly heavy album that delivers some great old school riffing! From the opening riff on the track "Triumph," which tears through one's skull as a proverbial sword of ice, to the melancholy endings of "Damned in Black" this album delivers one strong and heavy song after another. Standouts are "Against the Tide (In the Arctic World)," "My Dimension," and "Damned in Black". I would recommend this album not only to fans of Immortal, but fans of thrash and death as well.
