Let us take a trip back in time. The year will be 1988. Your capsule: an '85 Trans Am, tricked out, and super-cherry. Don't forget the Tiegs air freshener. Essence of cherry, of course. Snug yourself into your testicle-macerating black orange-tabs, and your black Brooks high-tops. Don't forget the Maiden Tee (Run to the Hills) and let your locks pour down the nape of your neck; the flap is back! But, don't forget the music. Someone such as you must disport him or herself in frissons of ludic bliss. This is where things get easier. Don't bother with your old Puppets cassette. I've got something much better. Take parts Prong, razor-thin slicings of Slayer, add a teacup of Testament, fold it over some Forbidden, freshen with an essence of Exodus, and stir in a medley of Megadeth and Metallica. What do you have? Darkane's Expanding Senses, a fulminating paean to past masters, a graceful and savage retrospective of 80's Bay Area thrash. Most of the reviews I consulted on this one seemed to be of either "we expected more from this one..." type or "this is a really awesome cd, but...". Having never heard Darkane, and thus harbouring no preconceptions, I couldn't fall prey to expectations or dither and cavil about what was lacking, rather than what was obviously there. Look, if you like thrash, you will find something to like on this one: a singer who can actually sing (at times, however, he has trouble holding notes, especially on "Submission"); a tempestuous and maundering drummer who still maintains the beat (although drumming more like a guitarist, following each riff like a bloodhound); axemen who can both play AND write and who share the same coruscating and roiling style. The best track, "Chaos v. Order" begins with a Prong style chug, mutates into an harrowing Slayeresque harmonic riff, and follows with verse and chorus in tribute to the ductile, flexuous yet heavy riffing of Testament and Forbidden. I can't yet say that Darkane has their own sound (although they blend into the medley some Gothen-pop keyboards and melody lines) but they produce some wicked, throwback, old-skool stuff. Hot Tracks: "Chaos v. Order" & "Parasites of the Unexplained".
