This release came as quite a shock for me. Not being a fan of CoF, I'd always heard stories of how they were just posers with no real musical talent, not to be taken seriously. And having only heard their '98 release, Cruelty and the Beast, I was positively unimpressed and had no premonition whatsoever that I'd be as impressed as I was when I first listened to Midian. Being a concept album, of sorts, based on Clive Barker's imaginary necropolis in the novella, Cabal, you'd probably guess this might contain some really cheesy material. And it does, partially, what with the inclusion of a pseudo-satanic chant on one of the tracks. But surprisingly, Midian comes across as a lavish, over-the-top, symphonic wall of sound that refuses to be taken lightly. In fact, instead of lifting samples from Barker's Hellraiser movies, as many bands have done in the past, Midian features an all original chilling narration from none other than Doug Bradley (of Pin Head fame) himself. Featuring an extravagant production, Midian utilizes operatic female vocals, bombastic choirs, multi-layered symphonic keyboards and some truly unmitigated, catchy-as-hell HEAVY metal riffs to create an album that keeps your attention from beginning to end. While, admittedly, Dani Filth's screeching vocals can and often do get on my nerves, the playing here is simply brilliant. Far from being pure black metal, Midian fuses melodic death with CoF's usual mega-dose of fiendish gothicism, establishing a sound that is as infectious as it is memorable. This release would make an excellent introduction for anyone who has not yet heard the band. Their best effort by far.

Cradle of Filth's latest offering, Midian, is a masterpiece of epic proportions.

"Whoa, dude!" I hear you saying. "Surely it can't be that good?"

Well it is. Though Midian is not as extreme as Cradle of Filth's previous albums, it is more dark and brooding and gothic as the Principles of Evil Made Flesh or Cruelty and the Beast ever were. The album shows the band's ability to blend non-metal elements such as operatic singing with brutal double kick-drumming, furious riffs and demonic growling into a unique and frightening sound. Dani Filth's lyric writing abilities are incredible and are more akin to poems than to traditional song lyrics. His variety of growls and yelps is amazing and unique and really contribute to the general feeling of evil the album perpetuates.

The only way to fully appreciate the evilness and heretical bliss that is Midian listen to it at night with the light dimmed down. From start to finish, Midian will possess you, torture you, scare and sacrifice you and finally spit your corpse out like a worthless bag of shit.

Upon first listen, this harks back to the Dusk album. The SOUND is at least, a major improvement on the abomination that was Cruelty. Great production. Stylistically, Midian is very Cradle... no real surprises... still lots of pomp and theatrics - and yes, they do this shit really well. Talented? I agree that this group is made up of some serious musicians. Good to see Allender back. Guitar riffage is a highlight of Midian - more traditional metal riffs exposed here. Track highlight for me is the searing pace and technicality of "Tearing the Veil from Grace". The Filth are nowhere near the commercial flakes the majority (minority) think they are... I'm not the band's biggest fan by any means, but Midian satisfies me nonetheless. Won't be Top 10 of 2000 but certainly a worthy effort.
