Even as a fan who prefers the post-Barnes Cannibal Corpse, I feel that Gore Obsessed is a step down for the band. After listening to it twelve times or so, the only memorable songs were the off-time "Pit of Zombies" and the cover of Metallica's "No Remorse," played in B-tuning.

The guitar work is not technically bedazzling and there are none of those strange harmonies that were frequent on Gallery of Suicide. The solos were very uninteresting as well. A plus, however, is there are a lot of odd time signatures and time changes. This is the album's only strong point, though, aside from decent vocals.

But if you're a Cannibal Corpse fan, you should pick this up. It's still better quality than most death metal.

I haven't been into Cannibal Corpse since Tomb of the Mutilated. They got stale in my opinion at that point. I have heard all of the other releases, but didn't get into any of them. I gave this one a try and it was pretty average. Not bad, but nothing special. If you are a die hard fan you will probably love it. I had to put Eaten Back to Life in the CD player to remember what I used to like about CC.

As with all Cannibal Corpse releases, I bought this one of the first day. When Bloodthirst came out, I rushed out bought it, and unlike almost all Cannibal Corpse fans, was fairly disappointed. This time, I was thoroughly satisfied.

The first 2 songs start out in standard Cannibal Corpse fashion: fast and brutal. Nothing new, but hell, nobody is going to expect a slow start. The element that comes in in the 3rd song, "Pit of Zombies," which in my opinion makes this album somewhat better than past releases, is a killer "slow" crunchy riff. Not slow like Poison, slow for CC. It gives the heavy feel that makes you grit your teeth and make people stare at you because you are in class with headphones on and you just threw your desk.

Anyway, I think a lot of the songs are more comprehensible without losing technicality compared to old releases. The same song writing that produced "From Skin to Liquid" has returned for some killer riffs. This stuff is truly memorable.

The production is good, especially the vocals. They are exceptionally clear; you can actually understand some of the words!

Anyway, I give it 5 skulls because I love CC and this is their best release in quite a while.
