Thrashy Viking metal is what comes to mind when I describe this cd. I just recently started listening to Bathory and I have heard a broad range of music from its beginning. The earlier music is similar to Venom lyically and musically and is true black metal. The more recent music has become viking epic metal and Nordland 1 is a perfect example. It crushes hard in a cacaphonic aural assault with interludes of mellow folk metal. I could recommend this cd to any listener interested in nordic metal. It still retains the rough production qualities that are somehow endearing and provide charater. I rate this cd 4 out of 5

I have been a Bathory fanatic since I was 15, in mid 1995. I have heard every album at least 100 times. I have all their albums on CD, LP and Picture Disc. I love their raw production, in both their early black metal material, and in their epic viking/nordic metal material as well. My favorite albums from them are Blood Fire Death, Hammerheart and (the hugely underrated) Requiem. And I've been highly anticipating this album since Quorthon mentioned in an interview right after Destroyer of Worlds that he would come out with a new album in 2002.

Well I've had the album for near a month, and I'm blown away. I love the production, the heavy and fuzzy guitars, the guitar leads, the big drum sound, the clean at times/fuzzy at other times bass sound, and of course the vocals. The songs have a melodic/sad feel to them, that draws you in to the whole theme. Most songs are genius! "Nordland", "Vinterblot", "Dragon's Breath", "Ring of Gold", "Foreverdark Woods" and "Mother Earth Father Thunder" are some of the best Bathory songs to date. "Broken Sword", while I still like it, is the worst song on the album. Quorthon said to Heathen, the man in charge of Twilight the unofficial Bathory page, that he likes Nordland II even more. I have no doubts that Nordland II won't be equally awesome. In the meantime, go out and get this album. If you like Blood on Ice, Hammerheart, and Twilight of the Gods you will no be disappointed. Hail the Hordes!
