Touted as the Kings Of True Britannic War-metal (wait 'till Bolt Thrower hears that!), Bal-Sagoth does have the coolest cover art this side of comicdom: a metallic cyber-warrior stepping through a stargate, away from a Dune-like alien form. The music is sometimes speedy but mostly mid-paced power metal slathered with generous helpings of symphonic ELP/ELO keyboards. Each song is epic, in that it has several different "suites." "The Empyreal Lexicon" goes through half a dozen interludes of guitar solos and vocal effects. Frontman Byron employs his spooky, story-telling vox mostly, though he does have a good black-metal growl. The songwriting is heavily influenced by science fiction, so the hokeyness of the whole concept tends to slough off with titles like the thundering "The Voyagers Beneath The Mare Imbrium" and the galloping "Behold, The Armies Of War Descend Screaming From The Heavens!" Kings of war-metal they are not, but Bal-Sagoth surely is vying to be among the royalty in the underground scene.

I bought this album because of the cool artwork and was disappointed becasue that's the only good thing about it. This is my impression of Bal-Sagoth writing material for this album: "I have an idea guys, if we throw lots of keyboards, silly vocals, and scales over the songs we won't have to write any good riffs." The vocals literally made me laugh out loud. Useless, Useless stuff.
