A Fine Day To Exit is the title of Anathema's latest album and as the title suggests they are exiting metal music to make room for other modern influences from the world of electronics and popular acts such as Radiohead-- sounds queer, am I right? Well, to tell you the truth I've had this album in my possession for over three months now and I just realised the potential the album has. At first it sounded uninteresting, because of the boring "Pressure" which has Radiohead written all over it. I gave it a try over and over again, but never made it into the first ten minutes. Then I sat down, giving the album 150 percent of my attention; I still think they could choose a better opening and more inviting track than "Pressure" since it's the albums weakest song, but after that the album begins to take shape. "Release" is a song full of clever arrangements and hypnotic vocal harmonies from the ever evolving Vincent, "Looking Outside Inside" is very quiet and moody before entering into a groovy midpaced atmosphere and "Barriers" is a fine example of how to combine female and male vocals, this time from Danny. I miss some heaviness, there's only three minutes in the song "Panic" and some moments in "Underworld" where the band goes full speed ahead and I could ask for more tempo changes. Still, the band has the creativity to arrange detailed music with a mature sound, not as melancholic as before though. This album may come as a shock to older fans, I don't blame them, but I for one give the band credit for such prowess and creativity and music is all about evolving isn't it? So after hearing the album a thousand times, I have come to two conclusions: A Fine Day To Exit is a demanding album that takes time to get into and it's not the bands best, and Judgement was and will always be their milestone in their career.
